107-year-old Woman Says The Secret To A Long Life Is Never Getting Married

If it’s a long life you want, one energetic woman who turned 107 this year has some advice: Never get married.

Louise Signore lives in New York, where she was celebrated with a birthday party at a local senior center. Jessica Layton, who covered the event for CBS New York, said Signore emphasized the never-getting-married part and also recommended something with which we can all get on board: Eat good food !

“Italian food. Italian food is very good for you. I was brought up with very good food. No soda , no cake,” Signore told the news reporter .

Well, “no cake” perhaps until she turned 107. Check out this clip about Signore and her big day as posted to YouTube by ABC 7 New York:

The only health assistance Signore has is a blood pressure pill she takes daily. She doesn’t walk with a cane nor does she need other stability support, and she even does her own shopping. Those who live around her are very impressed with how well she has aged.

While Signore is doing well these days, she has faced some challenges. She recently fought a battle with pneumonia.

Signore is also legally blind. And a few years ago she was assaulted during a robbery in the building where she resides.

But none of that has stopped her from moving forward and having fun! Dancing and exercise are also important to the 107-year old, as CBS reporter Layton mentioned in a tweet about the birthday gal:

Longevity apparently runs in her family. She has a sister who is 102 years old!

Signore, who was born in 1912 in Harlem, also stays very connected to her community and keeps many friends around her.

If you’re single and feeling a bit left out or isolated without a partner, look to Signore for inspiration. She seems pretty happy without a significant other!

People who want to live longer than the average person (78 years old in the United States) will need to lead a pretty healthy lifestyle, staying physically and mentally active. Harvard University offers tips for longevity, including:

• Eating healthfully with a diet rich in whole grains, veggies and fruits
• Taking a multivitamin on a daily basis
• Challenging your mind with new activities and games
• Having a strong social network (not just online!)
• Avoiding cigarettes and smoking

One thing that isn’t on the list of tips for living a long life? Marriage!

We’re inspired by the lovely Signore to keep active and to dance — even if there’s no ring on our finger.
